HOW MUCH VITAMIN D FOR ASTHMA

Asthma is a disease that can’t be cured, only managed. You can do plenty of things to cut down on your risk of having an asthma attack, and one of them may be taking vitamin D supplements. While vitamin D isn’t a replacement for a doctor’s asthma medicine, some researchers have found that taking vitamin D supplements daily helps cut down on asthma flare-ups. Vitamin D is a pro-hormone or steroid hormone in the way it acts in the body (in other words, it helps the body to balance hormone). So, taking vitamin D may be able to help reduce the frequency of your asthma flare-ups. While vitamin D supplements are safe for most people, it’s good to talk to your doctor before adding any new supplements to your routine.

HOW MUCH VITAMIN E

Vitamin E is the name given to a group of water-insoluble, plant-derived substances. It is an important nutrient that helps our bodies function at their best. The major role of vitamin E is to protect polyunsaturated fatty acids from oxidation. It acts as an antioxidant in the lipid phase of cell membranes that helps to remove the formed “free radicals” and thereby ensures that oxidative damage is lessened and decreased. For me, positive benefits seemed to top out at about 500mg/week.

HOW GOOD IS VITAMIN E

  • It protects the skin from environmental pollution
  • It has a protecting action against UV radiation – although it cannot be classed as a sunscreen
  • It is an excellent moisturizer
  • It contains powerful anti-inflammatory action – and this can prevent the signs of premature ageing, as inflammatory conditions in the skin is a leading cause of skin ageing
  • It has excellent wound healing properties
  • Apart from all of these excellent qualities, Vitamin E also enhances and helps with the penetration of other compounds into the skin and is itself well absorbed by human skin. 

HOW MUCH VITAMIN E

The NHS recommends a daily intake of 4mg a day for men and 3mg a day for women. Intakes of 3.8-6.2mg a day appear to be satisfactory for pregnant and lactating women. It’s a good idea to talk to your doctor to know the recommended dosage fit for you. But you should be able to get all the vitamin E you need from a balanced and varied diet.

HOW TO GET VITAMIN E

To get more vitamin E, try these foods:

  • Nuts, especially almonds and hazelnuts
  • Vegetable oils (like sunflower, safflower, soybean and wheat germ)
  • Seeds, like sunflower seeds
  • Leafy vegetables (spinach or chard)

Vitamin E is fat-soluble, so you’ll need it with some form of fat; otherwise, it won’t be absorbed or used efficiently. For example, add nuts or a homemade salad dressing made with oil to increase vitamin E absorption.

If you prefer a supplement, talk to your doctor first and then look for a multivitamin or a single supplement that provides 12 to 15 mg of vitamin E.

Vitamin E also works alongside vitamin C, so sufficient vitamin C levels are important too for optimizing vitamin E activity in the body.

HOW TO TAKE VITAMIN E

Vitamin E and other forms of vitamins are found in vegetable oils as well as grains, seeds, and nuts. They are naturally are present in our daily diet, especially when we emphasize foods, including oils, meat, eggs, and leafy vegetables. They can also be taken as we maintain routine use of multivitamins and nutritional supplements.
